Hispanic Heritage Month

From September 15-October 15, Forest Park School District 91 celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month with performances and cultural experiences that highlighted history, art, and tradition.

At Betsy Ross and Garfield Elementary Schools, students experienced Danzas Ceremoniales by Nahui Ollin, a performance highlighting Pre-Hispanic traditions of central Mexico. The group shared ancient ceremonial dances, music, and stories that honor elements of nature, totem animals, deities, and sacred actions.

The presentation featured authentic attire, indigenous instruments, and traditional songs, giving students an opportunity to join the dances, ask questions, and learn about the cultural significance behind each performance.

At Forest Park Middle School, students attended a performance by Sisai, an Andean music group known for sharing the spirit of the Andes through song and sound. Their interactive program introduced students to traditional instruments, rhythms, and stories from South America, building appreciation for the diversity of Latin American heritage.

At Field Stevenson Intermediate School, parents are organizing a school community ofrenda for the second year in a row. The ofrenda, or altar, is an important part of Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), a tradition that honors and remembers loved ones who have passed away. It reflects the belief that the memories of those who have died continue to live on through the stories and connections of the living. Field families can contribute to the ofrenda by submitting a photo of a loved one using this form: https://forms.gle/oy3mPyHbAcD7VGQo6.

From ancient dances to Andean music and community remembrance, these celebrations remind students of the richness of Hispanic and Indigenous cultures and the importance of honoring traditions that connect us all.

💛 Forest Park School District 91 proudly celebrates diversity, cultural awareness, and inclusion every day — not just during Hispanic Heritage Month.
